Meet the founder
Debate changed my life. In the classroom, I struggled to find my footing — but in debate, I found my voice. Everything shifted. I went from falling behind to earning straight As. Debate didn’t just help me succeed academically; it earned me a scholarship, gave me confidence, and taught me how to think critically, speak clearly, and advocate for myself.
So when my sister told me she wanted to start debate, I was thrilled — I knew how powerful it could be. But as I looked around, the options just didn’t offer what I knew was truly essential for growth. The coaching was inconsistent. The community wasn’t built for serious learners. The support just wasn’t there.
That’s why I created Vanguard: to build the program I wish my sister — and every young debater — could have had from the start. A place with a team-first environment, instructors I trust, and a culture that challenges students to grow into confident, capable leaders — in debate and beyond.

After going 2-4 at a tournament with a lowly finals TOC bid, he decided to embrace a far more chaotic approach to debate strategy. This strategy, built on the foundation of the holy duo, the delay counterplan and the politics DA, was probably best characterized as "kick over the table, turn off the lights, and run out of the room with the ballot before anybody can figure out what just happened."
This approach served him well, enabling him to win a state championship and defeat some top opponents en route to a more conventional college debate career. Vanguard chose Ryan because of his expertise in the politics DA and ability to quickly write devastating case negs. If you want to read the delay counterplan, he will teach you how to wield some truly dark magic.
